Abstract

502,100. Combined kinematographic and sound-recording cameras. KOLB, O. K. Sept. 10, 1937, No. 24734. [Class 40 (ii)] A combined kinematographic and soundrecording camera is provided with optical sound-recording means which is so mounted that it can be readily moved to one of two positions so that, irrespective of the direction in which the emulsion layer on the film is facing in the camera, the sound modulated light beam is always arranged to fall, directly on to said emulsion layer. With such an arrangement, a film can be used with the emulsion arranged facing the picture objective as in normal black and white film practice or a film may be employed in which a colour filter reseau, screen or screens and, it may be, the film base is interposed between the objective and the emulsion layer for the purpose of producing colour films or in which the interposed film base is goffered or lenticulated for the production either of coloured or stereoscopic effects, the sound in all cases being recorded directly on the emulsion layer. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement in which the picture image sequence is projected on the zone 02 of the film 0 by an objective 1 whilst adjacent to and on each side of the film in the vicinity of the sound track zone 03 are located two similar prismatic and lens combinations 21, 22 and 20, 23. The optical sound-recording device 25 together with its associated lens system 26 and prism 27 are mounted on a carrier 3 which is adapted to slide parallel with the optical axis of the lens 26 on a guide 4 so as to bring the prism 27 into one or other of the positions shown. The carrier 3 has mounted thereon a spring-controlled index indent 31 adapted to engage in one or other of the notches 41, or 42 in guide 4, thus serving to index the recording arrangement 25, 26, 27 in one or other operative position. Fig. 4 shows an alternative arrangement in which the recording device 25 and lens system 26 are adapted to rock about a pivot 28 so as to project the light through one or other of the prism and lens combinations 21, 221 and 20, 231 located on opposite sides of the film. Instead of rocking about the pivot 28, the recording device may be arranged with its optical axis parallel to the face of the film and may slide laterally so as to project the light into one or other of the prism and lens combinations. In a modification of this last arrangement, the recording device remains stationary and a rhomboidal prism, adapted to be rotated through 180‹, receives the light beam from the lens system 26 and by double reflection directs the beam through one or other of the lens prism arrangements.
