Abstract

501,938. Liquid-fuel burners. HOURWITZ, A. Oct. 11, 1937, No. 27583. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1936. [Classes. 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A liquid-fuel burner comprises a rotating atomizer cup 1 carried by the hollow shaft 2 of a turbine, hydraulic or electric motor 3 which shaft extends at its lower end into a constant level fuel receptacle 7 so that the fuel rises by centrifugal force to the cup and is flung off to mix and burn with air supplied by a fan 8 on the shaft 2. The motor 3 and receptacle 7 are secured to a cylindrical casing 4 attached to the apparatus to be heated. The atomizer cup is surrounded by a burner cup 16 supported by a throat 14 attached to an apertured frame 9 in the casing 4. The burner cup is formed with holes 16a having upturned edges. An insulated heating resistance 13 is mounted on the central portion 10 of tho frame 9. At starting the spray from the cup I is caught by the cup 16 and returned through a drain 11 to the receptacle 7 until the resistance 13 becomes sufficiently hot to vaporize and ignite the fuel. The shaft 2 is fitted with an apertured plug 6 at its lower end and may be of stepped or frusto-conical form with or without internal ribs. Alternatively its internal surface may be paraboloidal. The fuel level around the shaft 2 may be controlled by a float or by closing the receptacle with a cover 7 having a depending sleeve 7b formed with an air inlet 7c. The flame may be regulated by varying the speed of the motor or by varying the fuel supply either by a needle valve at the apertured plug 6 or by varying the fuel level around the shaft 2. Fig. 2 shows an arrangernent of fuel receptacle in which the fuel level in the sleeve 7b is rendered variable by providing a second sleeve 7d having an open top and fitted with an adjustable inverted tube 19 enclosing one leg of a U-tube 22, the other leg of which opens above the fuel level in the receptacle.
