Abstract
501,819. Stethoscopes ; piezo-electric crystal mountings. MONEY, R. W., and MONEY, R. Sept. 6, 1937, No. 24310. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] In an electrical stethoscope, a piezo-electric crystal microphone is provided with a vibration transmittuig-member adapted to be placed directly on the body and is mounted so that it is insulated from airborne sound and from local electrical interference. The crystal 1, which is preferably of Rochelle salt, is secured by three rubber feet to a base member 5 and carries a rod or stylus member 6. A cup 9 having a space in one wall for locating one carrier of the crystal unit-is provided with a disc 10 having a rubber annulus 11 surrounding the member 6. The cup 9 is mounted in a wooden bell 13 by means of a ring 12 and blocks 14 of rubber and the leads 17 are passed through a rubber-bushing 18 and are attached to the wall of an extension 13<SP>1</SP> of the bell 13. A cable 15 connecting the microphone to an amplifier is passed through a rubber ring 16 and the sheathing is connected by a wire 20 to a brass earthing sleeve 19. The oscillations of the crystal at high audio-frequencies are damped by a pad 21 of resilient material such as soft rubber or a cellulose jelly having the consistency of rubber.
