Abstract
500,936. Regulating the feed to machines for opening or cleaning cotton &c. AKT.-GES. J. J. RIETER & CIE. Aug. 23, 1938, No. 24834. Convention date, Sept. 18, 1937. [Class 120 (i)] In a method of regulating the feed of cotton and like fibrous material to opening or cleaning machines wherein the speed ratio of the drive of the feeding device is automatically adjusted in accordance with the thickness of the lap fed to the machine, the variation of this speed ratio is effected as required through the intermediary of a control device by means of a liquid or gaseous medium. The material is fed on a lattice 1 between a feed roller 2 and pedal levers 3 to a beater 4, the feed roller 2 being rotated through worm gearing 5, 6 from a shaft 7 to which is secured the upper belt cone 8. The shifter rod 12 for the belt fork 11 is provided with a wedge shaped guide track 13, and an arm 14 thereon is connected with a piston rod 15 common to two pistons 16, 17. The cylinder 19 is of greater diameter than the cylinder 18. A roller 20 which rides on the track 13 is mounted on a two-armed lever 21 pivoted at 22 to a lever 23 suspended freely from a connection 24 to the feed levers 3. The arm 23 is connected by a control rod 25 with a valve control-lever 26 which projects into recesses 35, 36 in the valve stems 29, 30 of two valves 31, 32. A conduit 37 is constantly under pressure of a gaseous or liquid operating-medium, and to the conduit 37 branches 38 .. 41 are connected as shown through the cylinders 18, 19 and the valve casings 27, 28. A passage 42 leads from the valve chamber 28 to the atmosphere. In operation, if the thickness of the lap diminishes, the left-hand end of the arm 23 is lowered about the joint 22 which at first remains in its original position. The rod 25 is lowered and the right-hand end of lever 26 raised thus lifting the valve 31. The pressure then spreads past the valve 31 to the conduit 40 and thus to the cylinder 19 displacing the piston 17 and moving the belt 9 to the right thereby increasing the speed of the shaft 7, and of the feed roller 2 to compensate for the diminished thickness of the lap. During the displacement of the rod 12, roller 20 descends on the track 13 rocks the lever 21 about the feed levers 3 and raises the pivot 22 thus lifting the rod 25 and rocking the control lever 26 allowing the valve 29, 31 to close and shut off the pressure. If, conversely, the feed increases, the left arm of the control lever 26 is lifted and the valve 32 opened allowing the operating medium in parts 19; 28, 40, 41 to discharge through the passage 42 to the atmosphere. The pressure surge thus produced in the cylinder 18 then moves the belt shifter 11 to the left to reduce the speed of feed. The parts are re-set by the action of the lever 21, the roller 20 being raised by the wedge 13.
