Abstract

500,232. Tipping-vehicles. BROMILOW & EDWARDS, Ltd., and SWIFT, H. W. Aug. 23, 1937, No. 23048. [Class. 108 (i)] Control apparatus for tipping gear including a ram or rams and a pump for supplying liquid thereto for tipping bodies on vehicles, comprises a valve-casing 1 containing a fullstroke valve 6 which is adapted to be opened by mechanism actuated when the body reaches the maximum tipping angle, e.g. 55‹, to allow liquid to flow through a branch circulating duct 5 shunting- the ram cylinder, the casing containing also a byepass 10 for the valve 6 including an overload relief valve 13 by means of which circulation through the byepass 10 is effected under'any overload conditions. As shown, the valve casing 1 has unions 2, 4, 12 adapted to be connected respectively to the delivery side of the pump, to the ram cylinder or cylinders, and to the oil tank or reservoir, the unions 2, 4 being directly connected by a duct 3. The spring-pressed ball-valve 6 is adapted to be opened by a plunger 8 which is mechanically associated, preferably by a linkage or lever system and a flexible cable, with a portion of the body which moves appreciably during the tipping operation. Thus when the body is raised the liquid circulates while the pump remains operating, sufficient residual pressure being maintained in the ram cylinder to hold the body raised. The plunger may have an over-riding manual control which may supplement the usual valve control in the driver's cab of the vehicle and whereby the body may be raised to and held in any intermediate position or the fully raised position. For three-way tipping bodies, the flexible cable is attached in the centre of the body so as to participate in all the tipping movements and .the lever system includes a longitudinally-extending rocker-shaft equipped with the over-riding control handle. The valve 13 comprises a spring-pressed ball, the spring pressure on which is adjustable by a removable sleeve-nut 15. The invention is stated to be particularly'suitable for use with the tipping gear described in Specification 499,227.
