Abstract

<PICT:0499924/III/1> In a process for the recovery of difficulty volatilizable products from pitches, tars, bitumens, coals, resins, waxes &c., of the ; kind in which the initial materials, preferably preheated, are atomized in a current of superheated steam or gas, the atomized materials are mixed with the steam or gas under pressure or vacuum in a locally very limited inlet zone, the length of which does not exceed a few centimetres, so that the materials are heated by the steam &c. only for a fraction of a second, whereupon the mixture is expanded into a non-heated expansion zone maintained at a lower pressure than the inlet zone where the products are cooled to a temperature below that at which decomposition can occur. The reaction temperature may be chosen so that slight decomposition of non - volatile fractions of the initial material takes place, whereby difficultly volatilizable decomposition products are obtained. The initial materials heated in a vessel F are fed through a nozzle D where they are atomized by heated gases passed through a coil A and a vaporizing tube C, the mixture being immediately expanded into a chamber E from which volatile constituents are withdrawn through a line H to condensation apparatus. The distance of the nozzle D from the inlet of the expansion chamber E is about 20 cms. so that with a flow of vapour of 5 metres per second the materials are in contact with the hot gases for 1/25 of a second. In examples: (1) coal-tar pitch was heated to 380 DEG C. and sprayed into a steam-jet heated to 600 DEG C.; 65 per cent viscous oil and 33 per cent pitch of high softening point were obtained; (6) 35 parts coal dispersed in 65 parts tar-oil were heated to 390 DEG C. and sprayed into steam heated to 600 DEG C., and on expansion the temperature of the mixture was reduced to 400 DEG C.; 29 parts residue and 70 parts distillate were obtained. Specification 169,763, [Class 32], is referred to.
