Abstract

499,889. Vehicle bodies. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd., and BAILEY, C. C. Aug. 3, 1937, No. 21405. [Class 108 (i)] In an omnibus or like vehicle body in which the sides and bulkheads are built up of sheetmetal panels, adjacent panels 1, 2 are formed with overlapping and interengaging parts such as V-shaped grooves at their edges which are in surface contact throughout the overlap and are clamped, e.g. by bolts 4 between similarlyshaped solid. strips or blocks 5, 6, thus forming pillars at the junctions of the panels for carrying, e.g. the roof or upper deck of the vehicle. To increase the stiffness the edges may be doubled back prior to forming the V-grooves. The inner skin or lining of the vehicle may be fastened to wood blocks or strips 8 mounted between L-section strips 7 attached to the edges of the panels. Flared window openings or rounded window edges 11 and channels or the like 12 to receive rubber &c. strips 13 for carrying the windows 14 may be formed in the panels, and, between the windows, facing strips 15 are attached to the blocks 8 on the inside of the vehicle. To facilitate repairs, the skin; moulding, &c. and any other interior finish are made in sections complete for each panel. In a modification, each block or strip 8 is replaced by two strips mounted on opposite sides of adjacent L-shaped members 7. Fig. 4 shows the junction between the near side of the body and the front bulkhead, a reinforcing L-section bar being clamped at one end between the panels 17, 18 and secured at its other end by a lap joint to the front window panel 19. The junction between an end side panel and rear corner panel is also shown. Fig. 6 shows the attachment of the body panelling to the chassis. Cross-beams comprising pairs of channel-section members 26 separated by wooden baulks 27 rest on the main chassis longitudinals and L-section bars 28 cut at an angle and each welded to an end piece to form a right-angle bend are bolted to the members 26 and carry the floor-boards 29. The inner skin 23 is attached at its top edge to a quadrant-section batten 30, brought down to the floor-boards, and its edge fastened by a wood strip 31. The members 26 are slit at their ends and opened out, and at the lower end of each pillar the part 9 of the L-section strip 7 is cut away and the remainder is gripped between the upwardly-bent part of the adjacent member 26 and a gusset plate 32.
