Abstract

499,837. Electrolytic surface treatment of metals. SCHERING-KAHLBAUM AKT.-GES. July 30, 1937, No. 21167. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1936. [Class 41] In a process wherein metal articles are led through an electrolytic bath for the production of a non- conducting protective coating thereon (e.g. the production of an oxide coating on aluminium or magnesium), the work-holders, which. may be of the same metal as the articles, are after removal of the treated goods passed through a bath for the removal of the non-conducting layer therefrom. The holders thereupon return to the loading position. The conveyer may be arranged outside the baths only the holders being immersed. The holders may consist of pairs of spring-biassed curved metal plates forming jaws. The apparatus may include baths for the treatment of the articles before and after coating. Corroded holders may be replaced. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the work-holders are designed to provide a point or line contact with the articles. One form of work-holder comprises a U-shaped member 2, of non- conducting material having perforations through which may be inserted a conductor 8 between which and the base 9 the articles 1 are held by means of spring clips 10. In a modification, the conductor 8 is bent upwards at the ends and are introduced into inclined slots in the holders. In another modification the base 9 of the holder is provided with a resilient bed, e.g. of rubber, between which and a rigid upper conducting member the articles are mounted. For mounting in the holders a set of the articles may first be engaged by a pair of intersecting rake-like members which are afterwards withdrawn. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
