Abstract

499,791. Electrodeposition of zinc; photo-electric measuring apparatus. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I., and WESTBROOK, L. R. July 29, 1937, No. 21073. [Class 41] [Also in Group XL] The (cyanide) bath contains an oxyheterocyclic compound other than furfural-e.g. piperonal, piperine, piperonylic acid, safrole, coumarin, furfuran, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, furfuryl alcohol, paraldol, ethyl or methyl furoate, fluorescein, glycol formal, pyronine, furoin, hydrofurfuramide, furfuramide, phthalide, rotenone or coumalic acid. The bath may contain also "brightening metals " (see Specification 473,147) such as aluminium, titanium and the metals of sub-group 1 of Groups VI and VII and of Group VIII, series 4, e.g. molybdenum, chromium, cobalt, nickel, iron, tungsten, uranium, manganese and rhenium, which may be added as salts or oxides, e.g. potassium ferrocyanide, cobalt sulphate, nickel sulphate, cobalt oxide and nickel oxide. The brightnesses of the zinc coatings are compared by means of the device shown. Light passes from a bulb 3 and a mirror 4 through a slit 6 in a partition 5 and is reflected from the zinc coating on the underside of a plate 15 to a photo-electric cell 9, the current generated in the cell being measured by a microammeter 10.
