Abstract

Silver halide emulsion layers and other layers containing protein are hardened by incorporating at any stage in the production or treatment of the layer an aliphatic aldehyde-carboxylic acid or a salt or halogen-free ester thereof or a substitution product containing an -OH, -CO, or -NH2 group but no halogen. The protein may be gelatine, albumen, casein, or gliadin and may be carried on a support of glass, paper, cellulose, a cellulose derivative, or metal. Suitable hardening agents are glyoxilic and formylacrylic acids.ALSO:Silver halide emulsion layers and other layers containing protein are hardened by incorporating at any stage in the production or treatment of the layer an aliphatic aldehyde carboxylic acid or a salt or halogen-free ester thereof or a substitution product containing an -OH, -CO, or -NH2 group but no halogen. The protein may be gelatine, albumen, casein, or gliadin and may be carried on a support of glass, paper, cellulose, or cellulose derivative, or metal. Suitable hardening agents are glyoxylic and formylacrylic acids.
