Abstract

Calcined titanium pigments are separated into particles of different sizes by dispersing them in water with the aid of a solution of a basic chloride of aluminium, cerium, iron thallium, thorium, titanium, or zirconium, with or without grinding, allowing the coarser particles to settle, and separating the aqueous suspension of the dispersed fine particles. Alternatively, the coarse particles may be separated in a centrifuge. From 0,1 to 2,5 parts of dispersing agent, reckoned as oxide, may be used for every 100 parts of pigment. The fine particles in suspension may be coagulated, as by addition of ammonia to give a pH value of 7 to the dispersion, or by addition of alkali or alkaline-earth metal hydroxides or of magnesium sulphate, and the pigment be then separated by settling and filtration. In examples, solutions of aluminium chloride of 60 per cent basicity and of titanium chloride of 70 per cent basicity are used as dispersing agents. Such solutions may be obtained by dissolving the hydroxide or basic sulphate in a deficiency of hydrochloric acid. The presence of soluble sulphates should be avoided, and this may be ensured by precipitating the SO4 ion by barium chloride. Specification 440,611 is referred to.
