Abstract

Water-soluble azo dyes are manufactured by combining with any coupling component a diazo compound from an amine of the general formula <FORM:0498879/IV/1> where X and Y are hydrogen or the same or different aliphatic, aromatic or aliphatic-aromatic radicles. Some of the products may be transformed into colour lakes. Examples describe the production of the following dyestuffs: (1) 1-aminobenzene-3-sulphodimethylamide-6-sulphonic acid --> 1-(21-chlorophenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone; the product yields yellow printing lakes; (2) the same diazo component --> 1-(21-chloro-61-methyl-41-sulphophenyl) -3-methyl-5-pyrazolone; the product dyes wool greenish-yellow shades; the diazo component may be replaced by the corresponding diethylamide or anilide; (3) 1-aminobenzene-3-sulphodiethylamide-6-sulphonic acid --> 1-(21-chloro-61-methylphenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone; the product dyes wool yellow shades; the coupling component may be replaced by 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, 1-phenyl-5-pyrazolone-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester or 1-(41-sulphophenyl)-5-pyrazolone-3-carboxylic acid, and the diazo component by the corresponding sulphonamide, diphenylamide, benzylamide, methylamide, 41-chloranilide, 41-methylanilide or 21-methoxyanilide; (4) 1-aminobenzene-3-sulphodimethylamide-6-sulphonic acid --> 2-acetylamino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid; the product dyes wool orange shades; the coupling component may be replaced by benzoyl-2 : 5 : 7-acid; (5) the same diazo component --> 2-aminonaphthalene-7-sulphonic acid (yellowish-red shades); (6) the same diazo component --> 2-amino-8-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid (red shades); the diazo component may be replaced by the corresponding N-methylanilide; the coupling components of (4) to (6) may be replaced by 1-acetylamino-8-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid or 1-benzenesulphamino-8-naphthol-3 : 6-disulphonic acid. Amines of the general formula given above are obtainable by reacting the corresponding 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-sulphonamides with sodium sulphite and reducing the nitro group.
