498,263. Photo-mechanical printiiigsurfaces. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Photo-Cylinder Corporation) Nov. 25, 1937, No. 32550. [Class 98 (ii)] Originals for producing etched intaglio printing-formes are produced by exposing a sensitive layer to the original using a halftone screen in conjunction with a stop in the shape of a regular figure, e.g. round or square and then exposing it to a uniformly lighted surface through a half-tone screen using a slotted diaphragm which produces a series! of lines in the parts of the negative correspondling to the darkest tones. The exposures may be made in reverse order. A positive is made from the resulting negative and is used to prepare the printing forme in known manner. The effect of the exposure with the round stop is to produce large overlapping dots a, Fig. 2, in the high lights, disconnected dots b in the intermediate tones, and very small widely spaced dots c in the dark tones. The second exposure produces lines which do not show in the high lights, connect the dots in the intermediate tones, and obliterate those in the dark tones as shown in Fig. 3. The resulting negative is printed by contact to form a positive which is again printed by contact on to a metal plate coated with sensitized asphaltum. The plate is afterwards etched giving recesses of uniform depth varying in size and separated by ribs which serve to support the doctor blade.
