[Classes 66 and 125 (ii)] A container for dispensing materials comprises a substantially rigid part 1, Figs. 2, 4, 5, for example, provided with a discharge nozzle 2, and a flexible diaphragm 3 which is deformable upwardly by finger pressure to cause the contents to be extruded through the nozzle, the diaphragm comprising a central outwardly or downwardly convex portion, which may have a flattened or re-entrant central part, and an annular concave indentation adjacent to the peripheral edge which is secured to the lower or bottom edge of the rigid portion. The diaphragm may be brought to the form shown at b by pressing it between dies before attachment, or it may be attached lying closely against part 1 as shown at a and brought to form b by liquid or pneumatic means or by filling the container with the ordinary contents under pressure ; during this operation, a die or other means may be employed as a support for the diaphragm, and suction may be applied to the undersurface thereof. One form of device adapted particularly for use with the container of Fig. 4 is shown in Fig. 6 ; this comprises a support 11 enclosing an adjustable mandrel formed with a die surface 15, the container being held in place by a clamping ring 13. Air trapped between the die and the expanding diaphragm can escape through an opening 16. Fig. 7 shows an adjustable form of spring-supported die 18, for use with the construction of Fig. 5, the spring becoming compressed as the diaphragm expands. The part of the (expanded) diaphragm which lies against the inner wall of the rigid part may be reinforced or protected by suitable means such as the socket 9, Figs. 2 and 5. The containers may be wholly or partially enclosed in outer casings which may carry or serve as a stopper for the delivery nozzle 2, or they may serve as refill cartridges for reservoir containers for paint, paste, mustard, &c.
