Abstract

496,502. Helicopters. HAMMOND, E. V. June 23, 1937, No. 17488. [Class 4] Relates to driving means for helicopters of the kind in which vanishing of the torque impressed on the rotor causes reduction in rotor blade pitch angle. A helicopter is fitted with a single rotor comprising blades m, Fig. 1, connected by flapping pivots to sleeve members k carried by a hub i either of spoke or of disc form freely rotatable on a shaft c. The rotor hub is driven by links n, Fig. 5, pivotally connected at one end to lever arms k<3> formed on the members k, which members are rotatably secured to the hub, and at the other end to a gear wheel d freely rotatable on shaft c and adapted to be driven by engine n through a free-wheel device and if desired a clutch. Rotation of sleeves k is limited by stops j<2>, j<3> on the hub i which co-operate with abutments k<4>, k5 on the sleeve. The stops define the maximum and minimum pitch angle positions of the blades. The arrangement is such that when gear d is driven by the engine sleeves k are rotated to maximum pitch angle position whilst when the rotor over-runs the gear d the sleeves k are forced by links n to the dotted line position of Fig. 5 corresponding to an autorotational valve of pitch angle. The lenth of link n and the positions of the stops may be adjustable. A fin b and tail-plane s incorporating trimming flaps are provided. The helicopter described is primarily intended to be flown anchored and to carry out the functions of a kite balloon. The machine need not carry a crew and may be used to carry a television camera to permit an observer on the ground to scan enemy country in time of war. Anchoring and stabilizing means comprise a cable q, Fig. 8, connected to a winding drum r and divided at the upper end into wires q<1> connected to the ends of laterally extending outriggers p and a wire q<2> (not shown) connected to the tail of the machine and adjustable in length. An electric motor may be employed for driving the rotor, receiving energy from a source on the ground.
