Abstract

496,236. Gravity-separation apparatus; filters. WUENSCH, C. E. May 27, 1937, No. 14778. Convention date, May 28, 1936. [Class 46] Blades 20 which move matter settled on the floor of a tank to a central sump 3 are connected to radial arms 16 by members 44, hinged at either end, and brace rods 45, Fig. 2, threaded to receive nuts 46, 47, the arrangement being such that the blades adjust their inclination and vertical position in accordance with the load. The arms 16 are attached to a shaft 6 which extends upward through the bottom of the tank, joint being made by a mercury seal in a pan 12. The lower end of the shaft is supported in a bearing 7 and the shaft is driven by gearing 8, 9. The outer ends of the arms may be provided with wheels 18, which run on a track 19. The material under treatment is supplied to the tank by a launder 27. Scum is collected by a trough 33A, which is connected to one of the arms 16 by rods 29, 30 and supported by a float 34. The scum is discharged by a flexible pipe 36 into a receptacle 37, attached to the shaft 6, and withdrawn through a suction pipe 38. Filter cloth is arranged over the perforated wall 49 of an annular compartment 39 and liquid is filtered as it is discharged from the settling-tank through the compartment. The compartment has a vertical baffle 51, a pipe 40 for the discharge of liquid, and a pipe 41 through which air under pressure is supplied at intervals to detach the solid matter collecting on the filter cloth. The compartment 39 may be divided into independent segments. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the provision of valves at the ends of the pipes 40, 41, which valves are operated automatically by a float in the compartment 49, and the augmentation of the available filtering area by the provision of hollow filtering leaves extending along within the wall 49, filtrate from the interior of the leaves being passed to the compartment 49. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
