[Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A vehicle or trailer carries a number of parallel runways 11 up which refuse containers 14 are hauled from a position on the ground as seen in Fig. 4, by means of a cord 19 passing to a hand or power operated winding drum. A series of these drums, one for each runway, are selectively clutched to a common driven shaft rotated by hand through chain gearing 22. Means are provided, independent of the winding mechanism, for locking the containers on the runways in two positions, one, for transit, in which the container is carried laterally wholly within the wheel base, and the other, for discharging, in which it slightly overlaps the lower edge of the runway so that discharge can take place by gravity through the opened end door 32. Each container has a pair of longitudinal skids 17 and a pair of parallel cross bars which operate the locking- mechanism shown in Fig. 5. The latter comprises levers 26, 28, at different levels on the runway. Contact of the cross-bar of an upwardly-moving container with the lever 26 trips the latter in passing the spring 27 restoring it. Continued upward movement then trips the lever 28. This, through the link 30, swings lever 26 so that the spring 27 passes the dead centre and retains the lever below the level of the cross-bars. The second bar on the container then contacts the projection 31 and re-sets the lever 26 in passing. In operation, in raising a container, the first cross-bar trips lever 26, and then lowers it on striking lever 28, while the second bar re-sets the lever 26. The raising is stopped before the second bar reaches the lever 28. On lowering the container slightly, the upper cross-bar rests against the upper bars 26 which act as stops. This is the transport position. On raising the container till the top bar trips the top lever 28, the top lever 26 is lowered, and the container can then be lowered. In lowering, the bottom cross-bar contacts 31 and re-sets the lever 26 to catch the top cross-bar and hold the receptacle in the dumping position. A further slight raising to trip the lever 28 allows complete lowering for grounding the emptied receptacle. The containers are provided with trunnions which can be engaged by the hooked axles of a lever hand truck for carrying the receptacles to and from the vehicle. Provision is made for carrying the hand-truck on the vehicle.
