Abstract

494,729. Motor-vehicle steering-gear. SEWELL, E. F. April 29, 1937, No. 12197. [Class 79 (v)] Apparatus for simultaneous and independent front and rear wheel steering comprises a pair of bars 1, 2 arranged side-by-side and respectively connected to the front and rear steering wheels, handoperated means being adapted to lock the bars together for steering all the wheels simultaneously or to release one from the other to permit of steering by front or rear wheels alone, the rear steering-gear being locked when it is. not in use. In the construction shown the front wheels 35 are steered by the usual hand wheel 30 and linkage 32, 33, 34. The rods 1, 2 are formed with racks 3, 7 gearing with wheels 5, 9 pivoted on the frame 6 and connected by crank-pins 42 and slidable universal joints 45 to the track rods 34, 34a of the front and rear wheels. Thus when the rods 1, 2 are locked together and the front wheels are steered, the rear wheels are simultaneously swivelled in the opposite direction. When the rods are disconnected the rear wheels can be steered independently by means of a hand wheel 29 connected to the rod 2 by a sleeve 28, bevel gearing 36, 37 and a pinion 38 gearing with a rack 39 on the rod. The rod 2 can be locked either to the rod 1 for simultaneous steering or to the frame 6 by means of a block 13 slidable transversely in grooves in the rod 2 and provided with locking pins 24 adapted to engage corresponding holes 25 in the rod 1 and the frame. The block 13 is normally urged by a spring 20 to the position shown in Fig. 4 in which the rods 1, 2 are locked together, and can be moved to the right by a hand lever 26 and Bowden cable 15, so as, first, to free the rod 2 from the rod 1, and secondly, to lock the rod 2 to the frame 6 when the rear steering wheels are in the straight ahead position. The block 13 carries a pin 21 sliding in a longitudinal slot 22 in the rod 1, and a pin 14 sliding in a slot 18 in a frame member 19. The universal joint member 45 slides on the crank-pins 42 between the arms of double links 43 connected to the crank-pins and to pins 44 fixed on the frame.
