Abstract

<PICT:0493999/III/1> In the process of recovering solvents from raffinates or extracts obtained in the extraction or de-waxing of mineral oils with solvent mixtures, which consists in evaporating the solvents in stage evaporators and blowing out the high boiling solvent by introducing vapours of the normally gaseous low boiling solvent, as described for example in Specifications 443,491 and 453,325, the low boiling solvent vapours are derived from a cooling apparatus in which the mixture of oil and solvent is cooled by self-evaporation of the low boiling solvent. Solvent mixtures specified are, cresol and propane, benzene and sulphur dioxide. Lubricating oil is treated in a tower 3 with benzene and sulphur dioxide from a receiver 4 passing through an expansion valve 5 to a cooler 6. The resulting raffinate passes to condenser pressure evaporator 9 maintained at 120 DEG C. and a low pressure evaporator 11 at 140 DEG C. Benzene is removed from the oil in evaporator 11 by sulphur dioxide vapours from the cooler 6 and pre-heated if desired in a heater 13. The oil is freed from small amounts of sulphur dioxide in an evaporator 14, and is removed through a pump 16. The sulphur dioxide is pumped off from evaporator 11 and is recompressed. The extract drawn off from the tower 3 is similarly treated in a further series of evaporators.
