Abstract
<PICT:0493857/III/1> Articles such as tumblers are banded by heating to a predetermined temperature and then bringing into rolling contact with a member applying the banding material. A tumbler 2 previously heated to the appropriate temperature in a conveyer oven is held on a vacuum chuck 1 mounted on a shaft 15 pivoted at 15 to tilt about a horizontal axis so as to bring the tumbler into and out of contact with applying discs 3. Each of the latter consists of steel plate 8 with a hollow ground periphery 12, mounted resiliently on a spring 11 carried between plates 9 secured to a shaft 4 which is positively driven. The discs dip into a container 5 filled with banding material 6 kept stirred by agitators 7 operated by lever and cam from the shaft 4. After the tumbler has been held in contact with the discs sufficiently long to produce a complete band, <PICT:0493857/III/2> it is raised therefrom by the action of a spring on the tiltable chuck, and at the same time a friction wheel 17 mounted on the shaft 15, is brought into contact with a rapidly rotating driving wheel 18 which accelerates the rotation of the tumbler to a rate above the banding rate, in order to smooth out any irregularities in the band applied.
