Abstract
Reclaim rubber, vulcanized rubber, or depolymerized rubber is heated with a hardenable phenol-aldehyde resin which is soluble in hydrocarbons and drying oils, and which may be in the liquid or solid stage. The mixture may be made by kneading or by mixing the ground components or by mixing solutions of the components, and removing the solvent. The heating is preferably effected in two stages, one at low temperatures followed by kneading and a further heating at higher temperatures. The product, which may be admixed with fillers, several being specified, vulcanizing agents, accelerators, &c., may be moulded or dissolved and used as a varnish or coating or impregnating medium. Resins specifically referred to include the reaction product obtained by reacting p-isopropyl phenol or p-cumyl phenol or a polynuclear phenol produced by interacting o-cresol with butyraldehyde or a mixture of an alkyl phenol and an interaction product of phenol and dipentene hydrochlorides, with formaldehyde, or the resins described in Specifications 334,572, [Class 2 (iii)], 417,122, 459,549, 467,899, 479,350, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,058,797 and 2,101,944. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of a heated mixture or reclaimed rubber and the condensation product of 1,3,5-methyl-isopropyl phenol and formaldehyde.ALSO:Reclaim rubber, vulcanized rubber or depolymerized rubber is heated with a hardenable phenol-aldehyde resin which is soluble in hydrocarbons and in drying oils, and which may be in the liquid or solid stage. The mixture may be made by kneading or by mixing the ground components or by mixing solutions of the components, and removing the solvent. The heating is preferably effected in two stages, one at low temperatures followed by kneading and a further heating under pressure at higher temperatures. The product, which may be admixed with fillers, several being specified, vulcanizing agents, accelerators, &c. may be moulded or dissolved and used as a varnish or coating or impregnating medium. Resins specifically referred to include the reaction product obtained by reacting p-isopropyl phenol or p-cumyl phenol or a polynuclear phenol produced by interacting o-cresol with butyraldehyde, or a mixture of an alkyl phenol and an interaction product of phenol and dipentene hydrochlorides, with formaldehyde, or the resins described in British Specifications 334,572, [Class 2 (iii)], 417,122, 459,549, 467,899, 479,350, [all in Group IV], and U.S.A. Specifications 2,058,797 and 2,101,944. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of a heated mixture of reclaimed rubber and the condensation product of 1.3.5.methylisopropyl-phenol and formaldehydde.
