Abstract

492,587. Preventing reverse movement. IFIELD, R. J. Jan. 22, 1937, No. 1923. [Class 103 (i)] In a device allowing rotation in one direction only at a time, balls 15 or rollers between a surface 13 having opposed inclines and a cylindrical 'or disc surface 14, the former surface is biassed in one direction by spring means so that each ball ooac'ts with one incline to give looking in one direction until the torque exceeds a predetermined amount whereupon the parts of the device move against the spring bias to allow the balls to coact with the 'other inclines to give locking in the other direction. The spring means comprises a spring 23 between levers 22 having rollers 21 coacting with cams 20 fixed to the member 12 carrying the inclined surfaces. If the turning movement in the direction opposed by the balls 15 and member 12 exceeds a predetermined amount the rollers.ride over the cams 20 and the operation of the device is reversed. The device may be used with a restricted differential gear as described in Specification 471,325, [Group XXIV], and 16219/37, and one of these devices is shown arranged at each end of a motor vehicle differential gear to prevent reverse rotation of each wheel when the vehicle moves forward or forward rotation when the vehicle moves in reverse. In a modification two devices are arranged side by side and have a common member 12, which is biassed by a laterally acting spring detent. In further modifications the member 14 is shown as a. disc with a set of rollers on each side enclosed by a member 12 of annular channel form. In a further modification the member 12 is of disc form and the rollers are tapered. In a further modification the inclined surfaces 30 are formed as shown in Fig. 8 and one of the members carrying the surfaces is axially slidable against spring means to allow the necessary angular movement for the change of direction of locking. In Fig. 9 a number of members 12 are radially slidable against springs 36 and have incliried surfaces 30 engaging a roller 15.
