Abstract
492,514. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 5, 1938, No. 13458. Convention date, May 6, 1937. [Class 40 (iv)] Instead of dialling, the calling subscriber pronounces the designation of the wanted subscriber into the microphone, and the resulting complex currents are analysed at the exchange into component fundamental frequencies and are translated into numerical form for controlling the selectors. The invention makes use of the fact that different words may be distinguished by their sound-frequency spectra. The spoken designation may comprise the code letters of the exchange as well as the number of the wanted subscriber. The calling line is extended to a finder-selector link 101, 103, with which the recording and translating apparatus is associated by a switch 105. The complex currents pass through an amplifier 109 in parallel to a number of band-pass filters 100-130 which are tuned to particular fundamental frequencies and which control selflocking relays 106-108 through gas-discharge tubes such as 112, 113. An A.C. source 111 is inductively coupled to the tubes 112, 113 to extinguish them shortly after they are fired. An additional band-pass filter 140 responsive to all speech frequencies, feeds gas-discharge tubes 142, 143 which are included in the locking circuits of relays 106-108 and which are extinguished by an inductively coupled A.C. source 141 when an interval occurs between the words of the spoken designation. The contacts of relays 106-108 are wired to control digit relays 160-169, one of which operates in response to each word representing a letter or digit. The digit relays 160-169 control relay registers which bring about the setting up of the connection in the usual manner or in a small system the digit relays may control the selectors directly.
