Abstract

Fibrous sheets or webs are made from chlorinated rubber by forming a slurry of fibrous chlorinated rubber, which may be produced as described in Specification 402,454, in water or other non-solvent for the chlorinated rubber, delivering the slurry on to a fine meshed gauze or like porous backing, draining off the liquid and subsequently drying the sheet or layer so formed. The concentration of the slurry is preferably less than 2 per cent. Small amounts of a binding agent may be added, e.g. ,01-1 per cent calculated on the slurry, of water glass, glue, gelatine or an alkyl cellulose such as methyl cellulose, or up to 5 per cent of rubber latex. Other fibrous materials, e.g. asbestos, paper pulp, manilla pulp, in amounts up to 10 per cent of the chlorinated rubber may also be incorporated. In an example, 20 parts of fibrous chlorinated rubber were added to 1000 parts of water and the mixture agitated for two hours to produce a homogeneous slurry. 1000 parts of water and 20 parts of latex were added and the resulting slurry was poured on a 250 mesh screen at the rate of 6 lb. per sq. foot to produce an even layer. As much liquid as possible was sucked through and the layer was removed from the screen and dried in a current of air at 50 DEG C. The dried sheet was a felt-like material about 5 mms. thick. Sheets formed by the process may be pressed or rolled before or after drying, greater pressure, e.g. up to 100 lb. per sq.in., producing a parchment-like product. A composite board having a low density interior protected by less permeable more resistant surfaces may be made by first forming two sheets as far as the pressing stage, pouring a layer of slurry on one of the sheets, draining, and then applying the second sheet and consolidating by light pressure.
