Abstract

491,955. Making wheel rims. KELSEYHAYES WHEEL CO. Dec. 11, 1936, No. 34088. Convention date, Jan. 20. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Stamping.-Drop centre wheel rims are formed from hoops of a diameter substantially corresponding to that of the base of the well of the finished rim, portions on opposite sides of that forming the well base being expanded to the required diameter and shaped to the desired profile. The cylindrical rim blank A is first placed upon a die member B, Fig. 3, and forced downwardly by a die C to flare one end of the blank B<2>. The blank is next reversed in position on the die and again pressed downwardly by a die, shaped to fit the expanded end, to flare the other end of the blank. The arcuate section blank is then placed over a support G, Fig. 5, in finishing dies for shaping the rim to the section shown. The die portions I are in the form of slidable segments which are moved down the inclines J<1> by a ring K<1> carried by the upper die H to contract the die I on the rim to impart the required form during axial compression between the dies G, H. In a modification, the first two steps of the process are performed simultaneously in dies in which the blank is gripped centrally and internally.
