Abstract
491,814. Ingot - heating furnaces. MORTON, W. A., and SPENCER, H. F. March 22, 1937, No. 8399. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a soaking-pit furnace, ingots are arranged on end and in spaced relation on the hearth, and heating-gases delivered vertically into the chamber are exhausted at hearth level. In the construction shown the heating-chamber 1 is of rectangular shape as seen in plan in the Figure, and the oval or rectangular heating-gas inlet port 4 is arranged in the middle of the hearth so that it can be surrounded by the ingots. Producer gas and recuperatively-heated air are supplied under control to the mixing chamber 23 through the ports 25, 22 respectively, and the products of combustion pass first to the top of the heating- chamber and then flow downwards to exhaust ports 16 leading to the recuperators 17. Blast furnace gas may be used instead of, or in addition to, producer gas as heating-agent, and is supplied through ports 26, the gas being preheated in pipes arranged in damper-controlled flues which byepass the recuperators. Any molten metal which accumulates on the hearth drains off through passages 7 to a pit 8 having a draw-off opening 8a and a cleaning door 9. Preferably the pits are built in batteries of three or more, and the main supply and exhaust connections for such a battery arc described. In a modification, Fig. 16 (not shown), recuperators are arranged between two heating-chambers, each having a port 4 at ono side of the hearth, and outlet ports 16 in the opposite wall adjacent the recuperators.
