[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups VI and II] Apparatus for toasting slices of bread or similar foodstuffs comprises a travelling conveyer having a grid like supporting surface consisting of a number of upstanding projections on which the slices rest, radiant heating devices at opposite sides of conveyer and means for drivings the conveyer to carry the foodstuff slowly between the heating surfaces. As shown, the bread slices are stacked in guides 44, 45 and the lowest slice is withdrawn by the pus'hers 26 on the conveyer which comprises two loose double-link chains 20 with transverse wires 23 looped on to the chain links. The transverse wires 25, which are bent to form the pushers 26, are maintained in position by passing the wire through eyes 27 of one link and back through the eyes 27 of the next link. The wires 23 are provided with small projections to support the slices, and to prevent the wires from masking the slices from the heating members. The chains 20 are supported on guides 58 between upper and lower sets 32, 33 of heating elements. The motor 12 and driving-gear are enclosed by a removable cover 43 carrying the guide 45 which may be adjusted after releasing the clamping-nut 46. A fixed tongue 48 carried by the cover 43 supports the pile of slices clear of the projections 24 to prevent scoring of the slices thereby. A rheostat 53 controls the motor speed. The conveyer is enclosed in a casing 11 having a removable side door. The toasted slices are discharged through a slot in the cover 55.
