Abstract

491,061. Making metal fabrics. HARRISON & JONES, Ltd., and HARRISON, W. A. April 7, 1938, No. 10606. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for making and securing connecting clips for spring mattresses comprises means for feeding, shearing and bending a wire to form a clip and a hammer plunger driven by a crank for clinching the clip over adjacent coils. Feed. The wire is fed against a stop 33 by rollers 17, 18 geared and rotated through a ratchet device by a chain anchored to a cam lever 11 and a spring 14. Energization of a solenoid removes a driving pin from a sprocket on the main shaft 1 to form a one revolution clutch. Shearing and bending. A slide 26 actuated by a cam 9 on the shaft 1 reciprocates a shear blade 25 which severs the wire at an angle and a die which bends the wire to U-shape over a former 31. A slide 38 reciprocated by a cam 40 carries a projection 37 engaging a lever 36 connected to a slide 34. Actuation of the slide 34 feeds the U -shaped clip along the mandrel 31 to a slot in clinching dies 52, 53. These dies are closed over the coils by inclined surfaces 54, 55 actuated by the cam 40. A crank 41 reciprocates a block 44 carrying a spring mounted head 48 and a hammer member 89. The block 48 is held up by detents 67 on levers 73 on descent of the block 44 and, when cams 72 separate the levers, the block 48 and the hammer 89 is advanced by springs 49 to clinch the clip.
