Abstract

490,936. Electric control systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ROSEBY, P. N., and MACKENZIE, J. F. Feb. 19, 1937, No. 5068. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a system for controlling remote apparatus over power mains, high-frequency control currents are injected into the low-tension network between the neutral and one phase conductor and are transmitted over the high-tension mains for the operation of apparatus connected to other low-tension networks. As shown, spark-gap apparatus G supplied from the L.T. network at substation 1, is operated by switch CN to transmit H.F. current via the power transformer, one winding of which is tuned by condenser VC1, and H.T. network to operate a relay J at substation 2 through the intermediary of a valve V1 and tuned circuit VC2, VC3, H, I connected to the L.T. network. Valve V1 is operated by positive grid swing produced by condenser FC and rectifier MR. The coils H, I are loosely coupled to prevent interference by parasitic H.F. currents, the coil H being wound with two windings to produce a diametral field and being rotatable in the plane of the coil I which is of solenoid type. This coil arrangement facilitates adjust. ment of the coupling without affecting the tuning. Upon operation of the relay J in response to a transmitted signal a further spark generator N is operated to effect control of responding devices connected between the neutral wire and earth at substation 2. To prevent interference with the operation of relay J, generator N produces a frequency which is higher than that of generator G ; additionally, relay J may be arranged to cut off after a predetermined period. A gas discharge tube biassed to almost its flash voltage may be used instead of the valve VI ; alternatively a sensitive relay may be operated directly by the signal voltage.
