Abstract

490,479. Making boxes; feeding sheets. BERGSTEIN, S. July 8, 1937, No. 19031. Convention date, March 9. [Class 18] [Also in Group XVI] The blank shown in Fig. 11 is made up into a tray in the collapsed state in a machine which folds under the triangular flaps f, f<1>, turns the sides b, c with their folded flaps and also tabs g, g<1> on to the top of the blank, and, after glue has been applied to the flaps or the tabs, folds the ends d, e on to the top of the blank so that the tabs overlie the folded-back flaps. In a machine for performing these operations, the topmost blank of a pile a, Fig. 20, is fed on to two conveyer belts running in channels 12 by a roller 10 with a friction pad 11. The latter has a grooved surface which is keyed up by a buffing wheel 10a driven by a separate motor, the buffing wheel being cleaned by a scraper 11h. Rollers 11c, carried by spring-pressed arms 11a adjustable in slots 11f, press on the various flaps of the topmost blank and prevent that blank from fouling the one underneath. The blanks are pushed through the machine by pins 15, Fig. 16, on the conveyer chains and this is assisted by two further chains with friction pads which engage the centre parts of both faces of the blank. The upper one of these additional chains runs in a series of inverted channels pressed downwards by springs and carried by an intermediate, longitudinal frame in the machine. The leading flaps f are depressed by rollers 33, 34 adjustably mounted on their shafts and of which the roller 33 is ribbed and roller 34 is provided with corresponding pockets ; and the flaps are folded back as they ride past plates 37 and pressure bars 38. The trailing flaps f<1> are subsequently depressed by rollers 39, 41, Fig. 17, similar to the rollers 33, 34, the flaps are held down by a pin 55 which runs along with the blank on a chain 52, and they are folded back by a sweep 60 rotating about a vertical axis. A finger 61 supports the flap adjacent the fold line and both sweep and finger ride with the blank over an inclined supporting bar 63. An horizontal chain 52 and a vertically swinging sweep 60 may be employed. A pair of twist belts turns the sides b, c and tabs g, g<1> over on to the upper surface of the blank which is then delivered on to feed chains running at right-angles to the main conveyer. Here the gluing and final folding operations are carried out by any usual apparatus.
