Abstract
489,861. Railway light signals; lamp - failure alarms. MACGREGOR, R. M., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 4, 1937, No. 3349. [Class 105] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A light signal for railways has a relatively low current flowing through the lamp when it is non- luminous and a lamp-failure relay is so associated with the circuit as to be energized by a current substantially the same whether the lamp is luminous or non-luminous so long as the circuit is intact. The Figure shows an arrangement in which an approaching train renders the signal lamp 1 luminous by closing a contact 8 to shunt out resistances 2, 3 in the circuit to the lamp. At other times these resistances together with a resistance 4 reduce the current below the luminous value and the voltage drop across the resistances 3, 4 is used to energize a relay 14. When the lamp is luminous an increased voltage drop exists across the resistance 4 but the current in the relay 14 remains substantially the same as before since this increased voltage drop is now applied to the relay 14 through the resistances 2, 3 in parallel and so is only partially effective. On failure of the lamp 1 the relay 14 is de-energized and so gives an indication ; in addition the de-energized relay 14 switches in a substitute filament or lamp 16 which may be approach lit by a contact 18.
