Abstract

489,804. Stencilling-apparatus. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. June 14, 1937, No. 16488. Convention date, June 18, 1936. [Class 100 (ii)] Apparatus for decorating bottles and like articles comprises an endless conveyer for conveying the articles from a receiving station to a decorating station and means situated between the two stations and co-operating with the conveyer for rotating the articles about their axes and causing corresponding selected peripheral areas of the articles to be presented for decoration at the decorating station. An endless conveyer 15 conveys a number of bottle-carriers 17 from a receiving position C to a stencilling position D where the bottles are rolled beneath a metal screen through which colour is applied by squeegees 24 carried by an endless chain 26 moving in an horizontal plane. Each carrier 17 is supported by pivot pins 33 each having a plain roller 34 at one end and a roller 35 with a circumferential rib 36 at the other end ; the rollers 34 engage a ramp 37, and the rollers 35 engage a similar ramp but formed with a groove whereby the bottles are raised into contact with the stencil and are registered longitudinally. Each bottle is held between a rotatable chuck 42 mounted on a slide 41 pressed inwardly by a spring 47, and a pad 51 carried by a shaft 52 rotatable in a bearing 53. A detent 55 engages a projection on the margin of the base of the bottle which is registered so that the designs are printed in a definite angular position with respect to the projection by means of a Geneva pinion 60 which is fixed to the shaft 52 and carries a spring-pressed ball 62 adapted to engage depressions in the face of the bearing 53. The bottle is placed between the members 42, 51 and is turned so that the projection interlocks with the detent. On forward movement, the pinion 60 engages a rack 66 whereby the bottle is rotated through 90‹, a guide 70 then engages a flat side of the pinion 60 to ensure that the bottle is in correct angular register, and a rack 74 rotates the bottle through 180‹ in contact with the stencil. The bottle is removed at E, and the pinion is restored to initial angular position by a rack 75. Where successive impressions are to be angularly spaced through 90‹ on the bottles, the rack 66 is replaced for the second impression by a rack providing 180‹ rotation ; the rack 75 is then unnecessary and is lowered out of action. Where 120‹ spacing is required, the bottles are printed in a machine having. racks 66, 74 and 75 each providing 120‹ rotation and then in a machine with a rack 66 corresponding to 240‹, a rack 74 of 120‹, and no rack 75.
