[Class 76] A machine, of the type in which leather is staked or softened by means of reciprocating gripping jaws which close on the work on one stroke and open on the reverse stroke, is provided with a work clamp, automatic means for opening and closing the clamp and an operating member, e.g. a treadle 22, which when moved in one direction renders the opening and closing mechanism effective by action of an intermediate connection between the treadle and the clamp and when moved in the opposite direction opens the clamp and renders the said intermediate connection and the automatic opening and closing means wholly inoperative. In the machine shown a rearward extension of a spring-controlled clamp arm 38 is connected by a wire rope 56 passing over rolls 44a, 45 on a spring controlled lever 6, to a lever 46 adjustable for tensioning purposes on a shaft 47. A lever 50 also keyed to the shaft 47 carries a roll 51 which engages a cam surface 62 keyed to the treadle shaft 35 and operated by the treadle. When the treadle is depressed the lever 46 applies tension to the rope so that the lever 6 is moved to a position in which a roll 55 on the lever is engaged by a cam 55 which as it rotates effects the opening and closing of the clamp. When the treadle is released and rises under the action of a counterweight 68, the lever 46 moves to the left, the roll 55 moves out of contact with the cam 5 and the clamp remains in open position. The mechanism is described as applied to the machine described in Specification 489,711.
