[Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIX] A magnetostrictive oscillator can be lowered below the bottom of a ship and turned in any direction to determine the direction of a source of sound. As shown in Fig. 5, the oscillator 11 can be lowered from position 19 to the position shown by the rack and pinion drive 28, 29 and can be turned to face any required direction by handle 23, the pointer 26 indicating its position relative to the ship. When not in use the oscillator is housed in the niche 18 or in the streamlined casing 33 on the ship's bottom. The oscillator comprises a number of strips of magnetostrictive material of the shape shown in Fig. 2, or in Fig. 4. The windings being arranged as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 for the two types of strips respectively. The overall length of the oscillator is arranged to be a multiple of the wavelength to which the oscillator is to respond whilst the width is equal to or less than this wavelength.
