[Class 131] A method of curling and waving hair comprises curling the hair at a relatively low temperature, transforming the curls into waves at the required places by means of adjustable wave shapers and clamps in boiling water contained in an open vessel placed on the head of the person under treatment, the water having been previously heated or the vessel being electrically heated. The waving vessel comprises a bottom 2 with integral sides 3 and removable end walls 4, 5. The end walls and the coacting ends of the side walls and bottom are grooved to receive rubber caskets 15, those at the end 4 being prolonged as at 16 to provide heat insulation for the head of the person under treatment. The removable end walls are secured in position by hooks 7 and toggle levers 9, 11. The vessel is held hori. zontally on a bracket 17 secured on a rod 18 and a drainage funnel 19 is secured to the bracket. The first wave shaper 23 is held immovable by grooves 31 in the sides 3 and the others are loose in the vessel. Each clamp comprises a pair of clamping plates 26 and finger levers 29, the levers being arranged to one side of the centre so that levers of adjacent clamps may be staggered with respect to each other. Fig. 6 shows a suitable heating press for curling the hair. The heating blocks 34 which are preferably of aluminium, have grooved co-operating faces 35, 36, 37, and are adjust ably held in position by engagement of the wire arms 39 with grooves 38 in their end faces. The hair to be curled is wound on curling tongs and placed between appropriate faces of the blocks. An insulating clamp to be adjusted to the bottom surfaces of the blocks comprises two members 49, Fig. 9, of ebonite &c., pivoted at one end and grooved to receive rubber gaskets 55 which have prolongations for insulating the head. Ribs 54 prevent direct contact of the clamp with the heated blocks. Hooks 53 are provided on the end links 50, 52 to hold the tongs during the curling operation. No claim is made in the Specification to the construction of tongs, curler and clamp.
