Abstract

489,024. Filters. BOWSER & CO., Inc., S. F. Oct. 15, 1936, No. 28077. Void. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1935..[Class 46] A coating of filter aid is deposited on the filter surfaces from wine or liquid under treatment before filtration proper is started and during filtration filter aid is continuously added to the liquid as it is supplied to the filter. Fig. 1 shows a filter 118 with filter leaves 126. Liquid is supplied from a tank 2 through a float-controlled valve 8 to a constant level tank 14 communicating through an aperture 16 with a mixing tank 18. The liquid mixed with filter aid is drawn from the tank 18 through a pipe 90 by a rotary pump 104 driven by a motor 32. The pump forces the liquid up vertical passages 120 to the top of the filter. Filtrate is discharged through a header 128 and up a pipe 132 having a sight glass 138 to a valve 142. During the formation of the coating, the valve 142 directs the liquid through a pipe 146 back to the tank 18, but during filtration the liquid is discharged through a pipe 150. When the filter requires cleaning, liquid remaining in the filter is withdrawn by the pump 104 through pipes 156, 94 and returned to the tank 18 through a pipe 164. Air is simultaneously admitted to the top of the filter from the tank 18 through a pipe 174. The cover 124 of the filter is then removed and water from a hose is directed against the filter leaves to detach the cakes and flush them through a cleaning opening 178, The Figure shows also connections used when the liquid for treatment is to be drawn from a tank 179 at a lower level. In this case part of the liquid on its way from the pump to the filter is directed through a pipe 186 and injector 190, which draws liquid mixed with filter aid from the tank 18. This mixture passes through a pipe 196 to the inlet side of the pump. Makeup liquid passes to the tank 18 from the top of the filter through the pipe 174. The tank 18 is fitted with rotary agitators 34, 36 driven from the motor 32. The necessary quantity of filter aid for forming the initial coating is supplied to the tank through an opening 22 in the top, but during filtration the filter aid is fed continuously from a hopper 48, shown in Fig. 2. The hopper has a shaft 56 connected to the shaft of the tank 18 and carrying agitator blades 64 and scraper blades 66, which feed the filter aid through an aperture 70, controlled by an adjustable gate 80. The filter aid passing through the aperture 70 falls through an aperture 72 into the tank 18.
