Abstract
488,705. Filters. BURGESS, A. F. (Deluxe Products Corporation) Oct. 5, 1936, No. 26960. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 17, 1937.] [Class 46] A filter cartridge consists of a mass of fibrous material provided internally with supporting means to prevent compression. Fig. 1 shows an oil filter having a cartridge in which the fibrous material 21 is enclosed in a sack 18 and is provided internally with a metal helix 15. The filtering material is wound about a cone 11 the bottom of which is extended horizontally to form the base of the cartridge below which is a sump 4 from which a tube 5 extends upwardly through the filter. The inlet 6 is narrowed at 7 to produce agitation of the oil as it passes into the tube 5. The latter is provided with openings 9 through which the oil is projected against the cone 11 the lower part of which is formed with perforations 12 through which the oil passes into the filtering medium 21. Dense ingredients separate out from the oil after its discharge through the openings 9 and gravitate into the sump 4. The filtered oil passes through the perforated cap 22 of the cartridge and leaves by the exit 38. The top of the filter is provided with a spring-pressed ball valve 25 which opens under excessive pressure and allows oil to pass directly from the inlet 6, through the tube 5 to the outlet 38. Fig. 5 shows a device for making the cartridge. The fibrous material which may be cotton is formed into a band of loose yarn and is fed through a slot 48 in a fixed cylinder 47 which encloses a spindle 41 carrying a chuck 42 to which the cone 11 is fixed by pins 43. The helix 15 is attached to the base of the cone which is rotated with the spindle 41. Before the winding operation is commenced the sack 18 is attached to the top of the cone and lies along the spindle. When the winding is completed the end block 46 is removed and the bag pulled over the outside of the cylinder 47 whereupon the cartridge is pushed out of the cylinder by the chuck 42 and pushed into another cylinder which pulls the bag 18 over the wound material in which position it is secured by a string. A wire handle is then attached. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a cartridge in which the internal supporting means comprises a quantity of coarse animal hair such as hog hair which is intermingled with the cotton yarn before the winding operation. In another form, the cartridge consists of a roll of wicking or paper or of alternate layers of wicking and paper. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 1,981,307.
