Abstract

488,435. Expanding hat boxes &c. BELLAU, H. Jan. 14, 1937, No. 1139. [Classes 18 and 133] An expanding case, box, &c. such as a suit-case, or hat - box, has # - shaped teeth j, Fig. 1, mounted on one member engaging recesses i in a pivoted and spring-controlled plate j mounted on the other member, such plate being moved into tooth-releasing position by a fingerpiece j2. The arrangement of the plate and tooth is shown in Fig. 3. The two parts of the container may be urged towards expanded position by spring rods mounted on the inner walls of the inner part and pressing on the bottom of the outer part. Springs may, for the same purpose, be arranged to press on the L-shaped teeth. Rubber or elastic bands may be provided for the same purpose. The recesses may be so shaped that the container may be contracted by simple pressure. Two such ratchet devices are used for a container and each may comprise a pair of ratchets. More than two telescopic sections may be used; for example there may be one inner and two outer portions either or both of which may carry a lid, thus providing, if desired, a double case.
