Abstract

2 - Hydroxymethyl - 1 : 3 - dioxolane of the formula <FORM:0488327/IV/1> is obtained by contacting ethylene glycol at an elevated temperature with a dehydrogenating catalyst. Preferably temperatures of 200-350 DEG C. are used in conjunction with a catalyst consisting of a mixture of reduced copper and chromium, but nickel, platinum, copper, palladium, silver and zinc oxide are also mentioned as catalysts. The product is contained in the fraction boiling at 97 DEG C. under 30 mm. pressure; it is useful as a solvent for cellulose acetate. According to the example, ethylene glycol vapour is conducted over a copper-chromium catalyst in the proportions of 96,5 : 3,5 which is maintained at 285 DEG C. An inert gas such as nitrogen may be used as diluent.
