Abstract
Products are prepared from crude olefine polysulphide plastics by treating the plastic with one or more of the following solvents, carbon bisulphide, aniline, benzene, toluene, chlorinated diphenyl, chlorinated naphthalene, chloroform, or ethylene dichloride, separating the solution from the undissolved fraction, and evaporating the solvent from the dissolved fraction. The soluble fraction is flexible, plastic and practically odourless, whilst the insoluble fraction, when obtained from a crude plastic prepared by the reaction of a polysulphide upon an olefine halogen additive compound or upon an aldehyde, is relatively hard and horny but, when obtained from a crude plastic prepared by bubbling an olefine gas through a bath of molten sulphur, is a viscous mass. Both fractions are soluble in sulphur and may be modified by vulcanization or by treatment with phosphorus pentasulphide; alternatively, the initial crude plastic may be modified by vulcanization or treatment with phosphorus pentasulphide before treating with the solvent. The soluble fraction may be plasticized and used as a lacquer, a paint or, when mixed with a filler such as sawdust, as a moulding composition; in solution, it may be employed for coating or impregnating purposes. In an example, an olefine polysulphide plastic obtained by bubbling butylene through a bath of molten sulphur is extracted with carbon bisulphide at room temperature.
