Abstract

487,395. Breathing and blood-circulation promoting apparatus. KOLB, F. Sept. 12, 1936, No. 24911. Void. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1935. [Class 81 (ii)] A patient is placed within a chamber, Fig. 12, and fitted with a face mask 63 connected, via a reservoir 60, to the pressure side of an air pump, the interior of the chamber being connected to the suction side, so that the pressure in the patient's lungs is never less than that of the air in the chamber. Alternation of the lung and chamber pressures, with any desired phase displacement between the two alternations is effected by an attendant in the chamber, who controls the amount of air escaping or entering the pumping circuit from the air outside the chamber. Manometers are provided in the chamber so that the various pressures may be observed. Preferably, the pressures are so controlled that when the pressure on the lungs reaches a minimum and commences to rise, the pressure on the body reaches a maximum and begins to fall. A pressure bag 91 may be fastened round the thorax and any desired pressure maintained therein by means of the hand pump 94 or the foot pump 95, taps 99 and 100 controlling the increase and decrease of the pressure. The venous circulation in the extremities may be closed by the application of pressure to sleeves 101 round the upper parts of the limbs. The chamber is made of dished plates assembled on a framework, and the joints between the various plates may be sealed by rubber gaskets 5, and tension members 6, 8, 9, Fig. 9.
