Abstract

Aqueous dispersions of bituminous materials, e.g. crude petroleum oils, fuel oils or fractions, distillates or residues obtained from such oils, having high viscosities are obtained by mixing the bituminous material, prior to dispersion, with water carried in a water-in-oil emulsion without the addition prior to this mixing operation of water-soluble substances either in the water-in-oil emulsion or separately. The oil used for the water-in-oil emulsion must be capable of dissolving the bituminous material and is preferably less viscous. It should also be neutral so that it will not react with emulsifying agents used to obtain the aqueous dispersion. Paraffin is a suitable oil, and water is dispersed therein by a water-insoluble agent such as aluminium stearate or oleate. Preferably after the bituminous material has been admixed with the water-in-oil emulsion, part or substantially the whole of the water is removed by evaporation prior to dispersion in water. This treatment is stated to redistribute the water-soluble bodies contained naturally in the bituminous materials in substantially smaller particles, so that on dispersion in water they increase the water-absorption of the bituminous material and hence its viscosity. Increase in viscosity is also obtained by better mixing of the bituminous material with the water-in-oil dispersion. According to examples, (1) 99 pts. of bitumen of 230 penetration at 25 DEG C. were mixed for 30 minutes with 1 pt. of a water-in-oil emulsion consisting of 2 pts. distilled water, 2 pts. paraffin oil and 1 pt. aluminium stearate. This mixture at 105 DEG C. was dispersed in water at 97 DEG C. containing 1 per cent oleine and a slight excess of caustic soda in a homogenizer driven at 8,000 r.p.m. with a gap of 0,01 inch. The dispersion contained 55-60 per cent of bituminous material. (2) A similar dispersion was obtained from 97,6 pts. of bitumen and 2,4 pts. of a water-in-oil emulsion consisting of 6 pts. distilled water, 5 pts. paraffin oil and 1 pt. aluminium stearate. (3) The mixture of bituminous material and emulsion obtained in example 1 was treated to evaporate off the water prior to the final dispersion. This treatment produced a marked increase in viscosity. Specification 389,810 is referred to.
