Abstract

Thermohardening moulding-compositions are prepared by mixing a melt of a phenol and aldehyde, such that, if the reaction were completed, would yield a non-hardening resin, a filler and sufficient aldehyde to make the composition thermohardening. The preferred melt is one formed under strongly alkaline conditions and with a reduced quantity of aldehyde. Acids conditions may also be used. Suitable substances to yield the necessary conditions include oxides, peroxides, and, hydroxides of alkaline earth and earth metals such as magnesium, calcium, barium, zinc and manganese and acids such as oxalic acid, ammonium chloride and aniline chloride. In examples, (1) phenol or cresol and paraform, aqueous formaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine and heated in the presence of calcium hydroxide to yield a melt and the resulting product, after cooling, is mixed with (1) paraform, wood meal and stearin oil, (2) wood meal, paraform, hexamethylenetetramine, stearine oil or stearic acid, (3) paraform and corundum, emery or silicon carbide, (4) phenol, paraform and oxalic acid or cresol, paraform and ammonium chloride are heated to yield a meet and the resulting product, after cooling, is mixed with wood meal, paraform, hexamethylene tetramine and stearine oil or stearic acid.
