Abstract

486,240. Elastic motors. BUNCE, W., and FOSTER, R. A. March 31, 1937, No. 9100. [Class 10] A compound elastic motor comprises at least two driven members each driven by a separate helically wound elastic driving element and each associated with a gearwheel 20, 21 geared to a common transmission member 22, a detent device 27 controlled by one driving element to prevent the release of the other until the energy of the first has been expended by a predetermined amount and a uni-directional coupling mechanism between each gear and its respective driven member so that the gear-wheels are free to rotate in the driving direction but not in the reverse direction. Each driving element comprises a flanged bushlike member 29 mounted between plates 23, 24 and housing a member having a hollow stem 49 and a head 50. These two members are keyed together by a square section pin 51 adapted to be coupled through a ring 54 with the elastic driving element. On each member 29, between the plates 23, 24 is mounted a gear-wheel 20 or 21 having an annular recess 34 in which is mounted a spring-pressed pawl 37 adapted to co-operate with a notch 42 in the member 29 to form a one-way coupling through which the motor may be wound and the transmission member 22 may be driven. The flange of one of the members 29 is cut away to form an abutment 46 and after the motor is wound the abutment is engaged by a flange 45a of a detent device 27 to prevent the rotation of the member. As the first elastic element becomes unwound and consequently slackened, a spring 50a moves the head 50 away from the flange of the member 29 forming a recess 56 into which moves the detent device 27, thus releasing the abutment 46 and allowing the second elastic element to come into operation. In a modification, five separately driven members are provided and are released in succession by detents operating as described. In a further modification, the member 49, 50 is dispensed with and each driven member is provided with a conical portion which on longitudinal movement allows the detent to move away from the abutment of the second driving member.
