Abstract
486,117. Electro - optical soundrecording. FIDELITY FILMS, Ltd., and CROWTHER, F. K. Nov. 25, 1936, No. 32281. [Class 40 (ii)] A variable density sound track is recorded at approximately constant amplitude and variations in width are used to indicate volume changes with the exception of sudden changes. A tetrode V1 incorporated in the amplifier is subject to automatic volume control as follows. Transformer T is connected in parallel with the amplifier and when an increasing current flows through rectifier V3 the potential change across R2 reduces the impedance of triode V2 so causing a fall in potential of the screening grid of V1 with a consequent decrease in amplification. The output of the amplifier is connected to the light source used for recording purposes. Variations in width of sound track to represent volume changes are effected by passing the varying anode current of V2 through an electromagnetic device K operating a movable shutter M such that an increase in current increases the width of the recording beam. The inertia of the shutter M renders it unable to follow very sudden changes in volume and by making the time-constant of the A.V.C. system of suitable magnitude these are recorded as changes in density. Thus the variations in width only follow the envelope of the changes in volume.
