Abstract

485,894. Electric couplings. MAJOR, F. J. April 9, 1937, No. 10199. [Class 38 (i)] Relates to an incandescent electric lamp of the kind in which a number of filaments 5, Fig. 1, are provided with a common lead 6, and a movable switch is mounted on the base 4 of the lamp, the switch consisting of a ring 18 which co-operates with contacts 15 to energize one or more of the filaments as required. According to the present invention, the contacts 15 project into a groove in the ring 18 to retain it in the base 4. The lead 6 is connected at 7 to the conductor sleeve 3 of the lamp base, and the other leads, 17, are connected to the contacts 15, Fig. 2, which consist of springs riveted to an annular band 10 of insulating material secured to the inside of the sleeve 3, the springs projecting through slots in the sleeve. The ring 18 is rotatably mounted on the sleeve 3 and has a groove on its inner surface, and the springs 15 engage in this groove. A conducting seg. ment 19 is fixed within the groove, so that rotation of the ring brings one or more of the springs 15 into electrical connection with a contact spring 20 connected to the central terminal 9 of the lamp base, a fuse 23 being interposed if desired. The ring 18 may be rotated step by step by means of a pull cord connected to a spring on the base and provided with a pawl which engages ratchet teeth on the ring.
