Abstract
485,667. Engine - cooling systems. ELLIOTT, A. G. Nov. 26, 1936, No. 32415. [Class 29] A liquid cooling system for an automobile engine includes a byepass E for the radiator controlled by a double-beat valve G<3>, G<5> operated by a thermostat exposed to the liquid, and shutter operating mechanism controlled by a second thermostat also exposed to the liquid but which becomes effective at a lower temperature than the valve thermostat. The valve thermostat comprises a bellows chamber G containing a volatile liquid and having a free end secured to a seat G<3> of the valve and a fixed end formed with a tubular guide for an extension G<2> on the seat G<3>. The shutter thermostat consists of a bellows having a fixed end secured to a flange H7 on an enclosing casing H<6> containing a volatile liquid and a free end H<2> provided with an extension having a recess for a ball-ended rod H<5> connected through a lever J, Fig. 3, with the adjusting links J2, J3 of the shutter mechanism. In the starting position of the engine, the liquid from the engine enters the casing F containing the thermostats and flows through the byepass E back to the engine. When, however, the liquid warms up the bellows G expand and move the valve to the left thus closing the inlet to the byepass E and opening the valve G<5> in the end of the casing F and allowing the liquid to circulate through the radiator. The bellows H effect the opening of the radiator shutter prior to the opening of the valve G<5>.
