Abstract

In manufacturing pulp for paperboard from substances such as straw digested in usual manner with milk of lime at a temperature above 100 DEG C., the calcium ions present in combined condition in the digested material are exchanged for other positive ions by treating the digested and washed pulp, with acids to a pH value of 6-6,5 followed if desired by addition of sufficient alkali to make the pulp alkaline, or with acid salts or with acids in the presence of acid reacting salts to a pH value of 4,5 to 5,5. Pulp obtained by cooking straw or mixtures of different kinds of straw with milk of lime at a temperature above 100 DEG C., is thoroughly washed and introduced to a paper forming machine. Sulphuric acid is added to the circulating water of the wire cloths of the machine to obtain a pH value of 6-6,5. A strong fairly waterproof board is produced. In a second example sulphuric acid is added in the beater to washed pulp obtained from straw by cooking with lime to produce a pH value of 6-6,5. In the paper forming machine a small excess of caustic soda is added to the circulating water. A very strong board is obtained. In a third example to the pulp in the beater is added a solution containing 4 per cent sulphuric acid and 8 per cent aluminium sulphate to produce a pH value of 4,5-5,5. A strong and perfectly waterproof board is obtained. Specification 126,879, [Class 96], is referred to.
