Abstract

484,974. Hand-irons. KELLNER, L., KELLNER. M., and GEBERT, V. Nov. 16, 1937, No. 31468. Convention date, Aug. 27. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XI] In an electric hand-iron having steaming means the portion 9 of the sole plate adjacent the steam-discharge orifice 5 is arranged to be cooler than the rear portion 10 whereby the steam issuing from the orifice is condensed into the goods being ironed and is subsequently reevaporated therefrom by the heat of the rear part of the iron. The steam valve is arranged to be opened only on the forward movement of the iron, the normal action of the hand of the user on the pivoted portion 6 of the handle opening and closing the valve through the lever 23. The pivoted portion may however be latched to the main portion at 11 to retain the valve open for both directions of movement of the iron. The two portions of the sole plate are separated by a groove 12 and the front portion of the iron is jacketed with material such as sodium sulphate 15 which melts or loses its water of crystallization and so absorbs heat. The heating element 2 which is provided above the rear portion only of the sole plate, is supported partly by a bimetallic strip 21 which, on the temperature of the rear plate becoming excessive, raises the heating element somewhat. The water container 1 is similarly partly supported by another bimetallic strip. The degree of heat may be controlled by a switch 13 and thermostat 14. The water chamber is provided with a baffle 22 and the steam valve is arranged to open, independently of the operation by the handle 6, by the steam at a predetermined pressure.
