Abstract

Rosin and other abietyl compounds, i.e. those containing the hydrocarbon nucleus of abietic acid, are hydrogenated in the liquid phase and preferably in a continuous manner using a catalyst consisting of a nickel-aluminium alloy previously activated, e.g. by treatment with alkali or hydrogen. Other abietyl compounds include abietic acid and its esters, e.g. methyl, ethyl or glyceryl; abietyl alcohol or esters of abietyl alcohol. The catalytic alloy may also include small amounts of copper, zirconium, cerium or cobalt as promoters. The abietyl compound and the hydrogen preferably flow in counter-current through granules of the catalyst, at a temperature of 70-230 DEG C. preferably about 210 DEG C. and a pressure of 100-5000 lb. per sq. inch. The lower temperatures and pressures are used when the compounds are dissolved in a solvent such as naphtha or isopropyl ether. The catalyst may be reactivated by treatment with an alkali solution, if desired after solvent extraction. In some cases, an acid pickle prior to the treatment with alkali is desirable.ALSO:Rosin and other abietyl compounds, i.e. those containing the hydrocarbon nucleus of abietic acid, are hydrogenated in the liquid phase and preferably in a continuous manner using a catalyst consisting of a nickel-aluminium alloy previously activated, e.g. by treatment with alkali or hydrogen.
